This charming object belongs to the 17th
century. This porcelain piece of Bodhisattva, Kuan-Yin, is an exquisite
example of Chinese craftsmanship. So beautiful a porcelain figure,
having its crown decorated with tiny roses and shown as wearing
different ornaments, had, originally, sixteen hands. At present, seven
are intact. Despite that, the fingers of the remaining hands are in
artistic gestures, thus looking very attractive. The pedestal of this
image is lotus-shaped, each petal of which is beautifully modelled so as
to look lively. Even the minute lines on them are shown by the Chinese
artist.
Do not believe in whatever I say or in whatever you have been
listening to traditionally. Do not believe it because it may be so. Do
not believe it because it has been logically proved. Do not believe it
because it is the people's verdict. Do not have faith in it because it
is worth yourfaith. Do not believe in my speech because this saint is
well-known or because he is adorable to us. "Adopt it only when
your sense of discrimination thinks it proper." Is it possible to
understand self-interest or the interest of others when man's heart is
overpowered by greed or by hatred or by temptation? - I ask you. -
