This image is made of black touch-stone which
is used for testing the purity of gold. It belongs to the 10th century
and was found in 1954, in Bharuch, while digging the foundation of a
house. It has formed a part of the museum collection. Generally,
according to Hindu Mythology the earth is shown as borne by the Boar on
his tusk, whereas in this image, the earth is seen as a small figure
resting on the left shoulder of the Boar. Thus, this image is
significantly different from the other representations of the subject.
This figure of Boar has four hands, holding conch, disc, mace and lotus.
The whole figure is adorned fully with ornaments like necklace, armlets,
girdle or waist-belt, rings on fingers, anklets on feet etc. In this
sculpture three tiny human figures appear to be pressed under the feet
and is believed to represent Nagas from nether-land.
Boar incarnation is the third in the order of the ten incarnations of
Lord Vishnu. According to the Hindu epics, the Earth was threatened by a
great deluge and was drowned. To rescue her from nether-world, Bramha,
the Creator of the universe, created a Boar out of his nose. This Boar,
by means of his great olfactory powers, then, retrieved the Earth which
was lost in the depths of the ocean and brought her out on his tusk. In
the five basic elements of the universe, the position of the Earth is
the last. The smell is its subtle principle. Boar's olfactory power is
extremely intense. So, Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a Boar and found
out the Earth, hidden by the monsters, from the depths of the ocean. The
Earth is the mother of virtues. She is the supporter of all beings. She
is also the promoter of noble qualities in the atmosphere of the sky.
(As a result of industrial development, when

at the end of the 20th
century, man has throttled the Mother Earth by excessive pollution and
brought about a 'Green House Effect', we realize this today, in the
context of this exhibit).
We have good sculptures of Boar-incarnation in India. One in
Mahabalipu- ram is an excellent example
